Feedstock Trader | full time

Location: Amsterdam

You are responsible for developing and managing the feedstock trading activities for the Argent Group. Together with a small trading team you are assigned to a feedstock portfolio to supply all Biodiesel refineries, sourcing from both UK and International Markets. You will take ownership of this portfolio by maintaining supplier relationships, negotiating trades, do thorough market research, understand value-in-use of this feedstock, analyse spread valuations and develop and execute a trade strategy.

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Execute Argent’s trading strategy for tallow (animal fats) and other feedstocks by maintaining and negotiating with regular suppliers in European and UK markets.
  • Lead in sourcing, development, and execution of strategies for new low cost, sustainable feedstock by assessing market opportunities.
  • Ensuring close corporation with the operations and logistics team to ensure smooth trades.
  • Collate market information and intel to support of the overall trading strategy for the Argent Group (both feedstock sourcing and biodiesel sales).
  • Manage pricing and contractual negotiation to ensure best value and least risk to Argent Energy.
  • Play an integral part in ensuring all feedstocks are technically suitable and deemed sustainable under relevant legislation (in conjunction with REDII and local Health and Safety regulations).
  • Keep up to date with all relevant legislative drivers within the waste and biodiesel sector, to ensure that Argent are able to exploit relevant markets for new sources of feedstock and added value routes for co-products.

Key Activities:

  • Develop and maintain new and existing, long-term, commercially viable relationships (directly or indirectly), with traders/brokers, waste producers, and other key stakeholders in the waste to energy sector.
  • Frequent negotiation of short and longer term contracts by assessing the commercial value of a contract in relation to the market.
  • Conduct execution of trades by ensuring that all trades are correctly input in trading capture systems and all relevant teams (logistics, planning, finance) are informed about the details of the trade.
  • Attend conferences, events, industry meetings, presentations etc. to raise company profile and build supplier relationships.
  • Use market fundamentals, monitor market trends and develop supply & demand scenarios to model prices and capitalize on trading opportunities.
  • Act as point of contact with internal stakeholders and suppliers and manage/coordinate responses to any issues to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Liaise closely with Argent’s technical, production and Health & Safety (H&S) teams to ensure any feedstock is viable and compatible with Argents process, and analysis can be fed back to supplier or customer in a timely manner.
  • Liaise closely with the Sustainability Department to ensure feedstocks are sustainable in line with relevant legislation.
  • Ensure information for all feedstock opportunities, including yield, sustainability, H&S and commercial details are maintained for each supplier, and up to date with relevant information, using relevant systems.
  • Monitor the scheduling, contractual quantity, quality standards and price point for all feedstocks purchased.
  • Visit both national and international suppliers to evaluate prospective business opportunities.
  • Investigate and gain knowledge of UK and International Markets for new potential feedstocks or suppliers.

The Department

The Trading Team is responsible for the purchase of raw materials and chemicals and the sale of products (biodiesel, biofuels, bio-glycerin and bio-fertilisers). The team consists of Head of Trade, 2 (Senior) Traders, Feedstock Development Manager, Book Manager and Back Office Analyst. The working language in this department is English.



You recognize yourself in the following competencies: attention to detail, ambitious, quality-conscious, financially analytical, commercial and a team player. You also bring:

  • A completed bachelor / university education (preferably Chemistry or Waste Management) at least 3 years of work experience;
  • Ideally complemented with a business degree;
  • Experience with financial and business systems to monitor business activities;
  • Proven experience preparing and reviewing reports;
  • Proven ability to work in a commercial culture of continuous improvement, process optimization and intellectual curiosity;
  • Excellent command of the English language in speech and writing;
  • Fundamental understanding of fats and oil (wastes) and biodiesel manufacturing processes;
  • Strong commercial understanding of end to end economics in biodiesel process;
  • In depth knowledge of waste management sector;
  • Knowledge of sustainability criteria for biodiesel raw materials;
  • Strong project management and leadership skills;
  • Ability to negotiate and sustain networking relationships;
  • Able to analyse and interpret data;
  • Willingness to travel (30% of time).
